Renewal 2

Have you ever found yourself cringing when the news reports the behaviour or words of those who call themselves Christians yet act without love, mercy or justice? This discrediting of the name ‘Christian’ has led some to want to find a new label to describe those of us who believe Jesus to be Lord and Saviour. The term ‘follower’ doesn’t work for many as a follower on social media is someone who takes an ‘interest in’

At our renewal service we reminded ourselves of the call to make disciples. Perhaps a disciple is slightly different to a Christian. In today’s terms, some might say a Christian, is someone who believes things about Jesus, however perhaps we could say that a disciple is someone who obeys Jesus. A disciple is someone who loves Jesus so much that their whole life is given over to the desire to please Him.

In Matthew 28 v19-20 Jesus said, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Notice how the instruction is to make disciples who have been taught to obey everything Jesus commanded

Donald chose 7 of the commands of Jesus at our renewal service:

  • Repent
  • Be fruitful (reproduce faith in others)
  • Love our neighbour
  • Do not judge
  • Be merciful
  • Give to the poor
  • Be one with other disciples

Pray over each one, asking God for the strength and courage to be obedient. Which one surprises you, and perhaps has been neglected in your life? Are there other commands of Jesus you feel are important?

Do you think others would describe you as someone who believes things about Jesus or someone who does things for Jesus? What do you need to change to make sure others see you as a disciple?
