It’s Your Breath

It’s Your Breath

At the risk of stating the obvious we can’t survive for very long without oxygen. And each and every breath we take is a gift of God’s grace. He is the Giver of life, whether or not people acknowledge Him.

Romans puts it this way, “For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever.” (11:36). Nobody is entitled to their next breath, for our lives are in God’s hands. Job says, “In his hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind” (12:10).

God gives breath in our lungs; but He breathes His Holy Spirit into us that we may truly live – that we may know and treasure Him.

God made Adam from the dust as he made the animals, but set him apart by breathing into his nostrils the breath of life, making him a living soul (Genesis 2:7). The Hebrew word for the breath of God is the same as the word for Spirit. God breathed His Spirit – His very essence – into Adam to make him alive not just physically, but spiritually – for God Himself is Spirit (John 4:24).

But because of sin our relationship was severed with our holy God, and the wages of sin is death – separation from the Giver of Life. So even though we were born breathing oxygen, we were all spiritually stillborn – slaves to the power of sin, without hope, lost in darkness, and broken.

Ephesians 2:4-9.  “But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ – by grace you have been saved – and raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages He might show the immeasurable riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast”.

God has breathed His Spirit into us who now believe upon Christ; He has given us Life Eternal – relationship with Him – that we may know His love and the light that shines into our darkness, bringing us hope and restoring our broken hearts. God is great and worthy of our praises, today and always.

As Andy and Gaynor sing over us may we once again breathe in God – being reminded of who He is and what He has done for us – that we may in turn join in with all those around the earth who, like us, worship Jesus, in breathing out His praises afresh.

Song lyrics:

You bring light to the darkness

You give hope, You restore

Every heart that is broken

Great are You, Lord

It’s Your breath in our lungs

So we pour out our praise

We pour out our praise

It’s Your breath in our lungs

So we pour out our praise to You only

And all the earth will shout Your praise

Our hearts will cry, these bones will sing

Great are You, Lord
