Will Someone Tell Me the Truth?!

I don’t know about you, but I’m finding it very difficult to work out who is telling the truth in all that is going on at the moment. Politicians and experts seem to say one thing, and everyone tells them they are wrong and lays into them. A few weeks down the line, they seem to backtrack on what they said before and change everything and you are left thinking hold on a minute, that’s not what you said before, and you end up not knowing who is telling the truth and what actually is the truth?

My mum always said, “the proof of the pudding is in the eating” and I suspect we are going to have to wait some time to work out who was telling the truth after all. And we realise that words are cheap and don’t stand for anything if they are not backed up by actions. Some of you, who are old like me, will remember the group Extreme and they sang a song called More Than Words. Here’s a trip down memory lane and an extract from it.

“Saying I love you

Is not the words I want to hear from you

It’s not that I want you

Not to say, but if you only knew

How easy it would be to show me how you feel

More than words is all you have to do to make it real

Then you wouldn’t have to say that you love me

‘Cause I’d already know”

We want more than words and more than platitudes, we want the truth and we want it backed up with integrity and action, and we’re not seeing much of that at the moment, but where we do see it is in the bible and in Jesus.

Jesus said many things and made many promises whilst he was on this earth but it wasn’t all talk and hot air and trying to impress people. He backed it up with his actions. He freely allowed himself to be nailed to a cross and crucified. And on the third day, he rose again, and is alive for us to encounter on a daily basis.

So whatever is going on in your life today, I want to remind you of some of the promises and words of Jesus, that we can believe in and know are true. As we read them, my prayer is that by the Holy Spirit, God touches your heart and encourages you with a word of truth today and you invite him to work in your life. Jesus said:

“I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” John 6:35

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

“I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” John 8:12

“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” John 10:10
